Climate Justice

“More than I want to talk about serving God, I want to talk about serving the planet . . . Strengthening this whole-Earth cooperation is to me the most urgent and important way we have of serving God, the holiest and most pressing invitation of our time.”

— Reb Zalman Schachter Shalomi

Healing our planet, and those who have suffered from its demise, is today’s urgent existential and religious issue. Climate change isn’t only about the intensification of violent weather systems. It’s not just about greenhouse gases and methane and melting ice caps. It’s not just about the devastation to animal populations. It’s also about human rights.

The effects of the crisis are borne disproportionately by the poor, by women, by people of color, and by younger generations. Drought and famine lead to mass migrations, refugee crises, civil unrest and war. Healing our planet is inextricably bound up with healing our fractured humanity and restoring the holiness at the heart of all creation.

Through monthly climate-themed events and gatherings, Sha’ar nurtures a commitment to sustainability in all its forms -- planetary, societal and spiritual -- and to living today in such a way that preserves the promise of tomorrow.
